SPICE up Your Latte!

This Rooibos - Turmeric Latte has become my go-to afternoon drink on rainy PNW days. With a different composition of antioxidants than green tea and none of the caffeine, rooibos is a fantastic herbal tea option. We also now have some great research on the positive health benefits of turmeric and I love that I can get this into my normal dietary intake rather than as a supplement. For the milk portion, I have been using a blend of oat and hemp milks. The plain oat milk provides plenty of sweetness and the hemp milk provides a nice blend of unsaturated fats. By themselves, they don't work well for my tastes (the oat is too sweet and the hemp is not sweet enough), but together is pure latte synergy. Top with a dusting of your favorite spice compliment (cinnamon, nutmeg or ginger) and savour a cup of spicy bliss.

Rooibos - Turmeric Latte

1/4 tsp ground, dried turmeric spice
14g Rooibos Tea (~ 2 Tbsp)
1/2 cup (4 oz) plain oat milk
1/2 cup (4 oz) plain hemp milk
Sprinkle ground cinnamon, nutmeg (fresh is fabulous) and/or ginger

Steep rooibos in 3-4 oz water at 195 degrees F for 2 minutes. I prefer using my aeropress for this operation and the red espresso rooibos makes the process fool-proof. However, use whatever loose-leaf rooibos you have around. If you have tea-bags, it takes about 7 to equal 14g of tea (yes, it is that concentrated).

Meanwhile, heat your milk blend in the microwave on high for 90 seconds. If you have a milk frother, please use it (if not, pick one up on your next trip to IKEA).

Add turmeric to your favorite mug. Add steeped rooibos. Stir.

Add heated and frothed milk blend. Top with a light dusting of cinnamon, fresh ground nutmeg and/or ginger.

Enjoy!
